The Cost of Health: What Waiting Really Costs

Reviewed by Dr. Mark Hechler, DO, FAOCO, and Tandi Hechler, BSN, RN, NC-BC | Revelation Health & Well-Being, Lee's Summit, MO · Last reviewed: October 2026
TL;DR: When symptoms go unexplained for years, the cost adds up quietly: visits that end without answers, supplements bought on guesses, and energy, sleep, and focus we do not get back. Looking closer has a cost too, and we publish ours. Our free guide, The Cost of Health, walks through both sides so you can decide what makes sense for you.
It Usually Starts Small
A little more tired than last year. Sleep that does not feel restful. A few pounds that will not move, no matter what you change. Brain fog in the afternoon. Each one is easy to explain away on its own.
So you mention it at a checkup. Your labs come back normal. You hear that it is probably stress, or age, or just part of midlife. Maybe you try a supplement a friend recommended, then another. A year goes by, then three.
Many of the people who come to us have been on this road for years. Nothing was ever dramatically wrong, and nothing was ever quite right.
Signs It May Be Time to Look Closer
None of these on its own means something is wrong. Together, or when they linger for months, they are worth a closer look.
- Fatigue that sleep does not fix. Waking up tired, or needing caffeine to get through the afternoon.
- Sleep that has changed. Trouble falling asleep, waking at 3 a.m., or night sweats.
- Weight that will not move. Especially around the middle, even when food and exercise have not changed.
- Brain fog. Losing words, losing focus, or feeling a step behind.
- Mood shifts. More irritability, more anxiety, or a flatness that was not there before.
- Slower recovery. Workouts feel harder, and soreness lasts longer.
- Normal labs while you still feel off. Being told everything looks fine when it does not feel fine.
These are common midlife experiences. They often trace back to changes in hormones, thyroid, blood sugar, or inflammation that a short visit may not have time to explore.
The Costs That Do Not Show Up on One Bill
When we add up what that road costs, it is more than any single bill shows.
- Visits without answers. Copays, specialist referrals, and repeat appointments that end with "everything looks fine."
- Guesswork. Supplements, programs, and products bought on recommendation instead of on results. Many of us have a cabinet full of them.
- Energy and focus. Afternoons lost to fatigue, work that takes longer than it should, and less left over for the people and things we care about.
- Sleep and mood. Poor sleep touches nearly everything else, and it is often one of the first things people tell us they want back.
- Time. Years spent waiting for symptoms to become "bad enough" to take seriously.
None of these feel large in a single month. Over several years, they add up.
The Bigger Picture
The same pattern shows up nationally. According to the CDC, 90% of the nation's $5.3 trillion in annual health care spending goes to people with chronic and mental health conditions. Much of our health care system is built to treat those conditions once they are diagnosed. Far less of it is built to look closely at the early signs.
The Financial Cost of Waiting
Once early changes become a diagnosis, the cost tends to rise. Here is what some common chronic conditions cost in the U.S.
- Diabetes: About $12,000 a year in added medical costs (American Diabetes Association)
- Heart disease: An average of $4,900 a year in treatment (AHRQ)
- A fracture after age 50: About $27,000 in the first year, and about $58,000 for a hip fracture (ISPOR)
- Long-term care: $70,800 a year for assisted living, up to $127,750 for a private nursing home room (Genworth and CareScout)
Many of these conditions start quietly. In a long-term study published in The Lancet, changes in blood sugar and insulin began 3 to 6 years before a type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Today, more than 115 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, according to the CDC.
What Prevention Protects
Prevention is about more than avoiding a diagnosis. Acting early can protect specific parts of your health while there is still the most room to change course.
- Blood sugar. Prediabetes can often be turned around. In the CDC's lifestyle change program, people with prediabetes cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%, and by 71% for those over 60.
- Bone. Women can lose up to 20% of their bone density in the five to seven years after menopause, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. Those years are when strength training, nutrition, and hormone care where appropriate can make the most difference.
- Brain. A 2024 Lancet Commission report found that nearly half of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed by addressing 14 risk factors. Several of them are midlife factors, including high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, and hearing loss.
- Muscle. Muscle supports metabolism, balance, and independence. It is far easier to build and keep in midlife than to regain later.
Prevention does not guarantee any particular outcome. It does give you more options while you still have them.
What It Costs to Look Closer
Looking closer has a cost too, and we think you should see it plainly before deciding anything. At Revelation Health, the Reveal Assessment is $1,111. It includes a comprehensive lab panel of more than 100 biomarkers and a two-hour visit with both Dr. Mark and Tandi. Ongoing care is optional, and every price we charge is on our pricing page.
What you receive is a clear picture of what is happening in your body, read against optimal ranges as well as standard ones, and a plan built around your results. Some people continue with us. Others take that plan to their primary care provider. Either way, you are no longer guessing. Our article on whether functional medicine is worth it covers what you receive in more detail.
Waiting Is a Choice Too
We are not here to rush anyone. Waiting is also a decision, even when it does not feel like one, and we would like you to make it with full information: what the next few years might cost if things stay the same, and what it costs to find out what is going on.
That is what our free guide is for.
